If you or your child would like to participate in our regular riding lessons please send us an e-mail with "Lessons" in the subject line of your e-mail. If the slot you are interested in is full we can put you on a waiting list. The following is how we determine which class your child will be evaluated for placement: Basic Flatwork Riding Portion (English and Western) Intro Level: Walk, Trot/Jog, Diagonals, Changing Directions via half circle Beginner Level: Walk, Trot/Jog, Trotting/Jogging Correct Diagonals, Change direction via crossing Diagonal * Example - 20m circle at the Walk, Inner and Outer Tracks at Walk Beginner Novice Level: Walk, Trot/Jog, Canter/Lope, Canter/Lope Correct Leads, Change direction via crossing the Diagonal at Trot/Jog * Exampe - 20m circle at Trot/Jog, Inner and Outer Tracks at Trot Novice Level: Free Walk, Medium vs. Working Walk and Trot/Jog * Example - 2 loop Serpentine, Figure 8, Half Volte in the corners Training (First Level): Free Trot/Jog, Lengthening Walk and Trot/Jog, Working vs. Medium Canter/Lope * Example - 10 and 15m circles, Changing direction through the circle, 3 loop Serpentine, Leg Yield, Turn on Haunches and Forehand, Simple Change Advanced Flatwork/Dressage Riding Portion Preliminary (Second Level): Collected Trot and Canter * Example - Shoulder-in (Trot), Renvers, Travers, Serpentine 3 loops maintaining right or left canter throughout (no lead changes), Counter Canter Intermediate (Third Level): Extended Canter and Trot * Example - Half Pass, Flying Change Advanced (Fourth Level): “Very Collected” Trot and Canter * Example - Half Pirouette, 3 Flying changes every 4th stride Advanced Western (Barrel Racing, Trail, Western Pleasure, Reining) Riding Portion • Focus is on Maneuvering around Barrels or obstacles. Western Pleasure and Reining portion on collection to achieve faster, more accurate reaction time. • Trot and Canter is used as practice for barrel racing or a faster type of riding. Preliminary: Collected Jog/Trot and Lope/Canter * Example - Shoulder-in (Trot or Jog), Renvers, Travers, Serpentine 3 loops simple showmanship patterns, simple speed preparation patterns Intermediate: Gallop, Transistions walk to canter/lope * Example - Half Pass, Flying Lead change Advanced: “Very Collected” Jog and Lope, transistions between Gallop and collected canter * Example - Half Pirouette, 3 Flying Lead changes through speed patterns, Pole Bending and Barrel Racing, precise navigation through trail and showmanship patterns Pre-Jumping Portion Intro: Introduction to 2-point and ground poles at the walk *MUST be preparing to test for Novice Beginner: 2-point at the walk and trot, 2-point over ground poles at the walk Practice: Hold 2-point without hands Beginner Novice: 2-point at the walk, trot and canter, 2-point over ground poles at the trot Practice: 2-point without stirrups Novice 1: Trot over ground pole course, Trot at small obstacle Novice 2: Trot small course Jumping Portion • Comprised of both Hunters and Equitation with possible introductions to Stadium Jumping and Cross country Jumping Maiden A. Crossbars at the trot, crossbar courses at the trot B. Crossbars at the canter, crossbar courses at the canter Short/Long/Adult Stirrup (depending on age) A. 18” verticals at the trot B. 18” vertical courses at the canter Beginner Hunters/Equitation A. 2’ – 2’3, introduction to small planks, coups, and other appropriate obstacles B. Work on a controlled simple change at the canter (canter-trot-canter) Beginner Novice Hunters/Equitation A. Ride complex figures throughout courses B. 2’3 - 2’6 courses C. Begin learning/practicing flying lead changes D. Establish ability to properly count strides to jumps Novice Hunters/Equitation with possible introduction to Stadium Jumping A. 2’6 – 3’ courses B. Continue learning/practice flying lead changes C. Practice manipulating a horse’s strides throughout a course/between jumps Training Hunters/Equitation A. 3’-3’6 courses B. Establish ability to properly manipulate a horse’s strides throughout a course Each rider will be tested at each level before advancing to the next level - the rider will need to pass a written test as well as a ground and riding test. As they advance to new levels, testing will become more difficult and they will be required to pass the riding test on different horses as well.
